Lawn Be Gone and Garden Gurus
A group of 36 attendees transformed a less-than-attractive, water wasting, pollution generating, carbon negative suburban front yard in Los Angeles into a watershed wise landscape in which rain from the roof, via an inexpensive rain barrel, is captured, filtered, cleaned and stored in a living soil sponge. Between the plants and the microbes, carbon from our atmosphere is converted into pizza to feed the a rocking soil party.
With minor adjustments to the way the ground is shaped, all the water from a 1” rain event will be captured and held within the new rain garden, removing the chance of polluting our ocean and beaches.
The second part of this project is the exciting launch of our new Garden Gurus service. An affordable technical support service for homeowners who just need that little extra help to get them to complete their turf removal project.
Of the 36 attendees at Saturday’s HOW, those who were LADWP customers were given a free, hour long, on-site, consultation with a Garden Guru. This gives them the opportunity to ask specific questions about their yard, and help with applying all they have learnt via the HOWs and California Friendly Landscape Training class. Our Guru appointments have started, and the questions being asked include
- How do I sheet mulch my lawn?
- What plants should I use in my yard?
- How do I redirect my downspout?
- How do I create a swale and a rain garden?
We are really excited about this project and hope to spread it to other parts of California soon. Watch this space!
