Yard Fairy Receives CLCA Beautification Award for Low Water Landscape Design

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 6, 2009 San Diego, CA--san diego landscaping

Diane Downey, owner of San Diego based landscaping company The Yard Fairy, received a Beautification Award on June 26, 2009 from the CLCA (California Landscape Contractors Association) for her Water Conservation Irrigation project conducted for a Santa Luisa, CA residence.

Diane was awarded in the Residential WaterSmart Irrigation category for the landscaping work she did on 1253 Santa Luisa, Solana Beach CA. The goal of this residential landscaping project was to "meet the needs of a growing family while providing a highly efficient irrigation system." The client requested a landscape that they could grow with that would also reduce their landscape water use.

For the Santa Luisa project, the Yard Fairy's plan was to incorporate lawn and play equipment for the children to enjoy, which could later be replaced with a pool by way of side access. Low-water plantings and an attractive walkway to the house replaced the unused front lawn and serve to cut down on water use. A mix of edible and ornamental plants, along with the stonework around the patio cover, were chosen to reflect the Arts and Crafts style home modeling. The family dog's needs were taken into account as well, with a dog run lined with pavers, and a specially constructed walkway leading to the pet door. An organically grown vegetable garden and a sunflower house were also added, giving the children opportunities to connect with the natural world around them.

san diego landscapingChallenges that arose during this project included a faulty original irrigation unit which needed to be replaced, and an unreliable power source which prevented the plants from receiving adequate water. A smart controller was installed as a remedy to this issue, which allowed the plants to recover.

"This award is about water conservation which blends in so perfectly with what The Yard Fairy has been focusing on for the last 5 or 6 years." said Diane Downey. "We live in the desert and therefore need to plan our landscapes accordingly. It does no good for a San Diego resident to throw in all these tropical plants that need a ton of water. I work with landscaping clients, teaching them how to be responsible in dealing with arid regions. I'm pleased that of all the CLCA awards we could have won, this was the area that we did."

The CLCA Beautification Awards were presented by Mr. Heath Bedal, CLCA State President. categories include Residential Construction, Large Residential Construction, Small Landscape Renovation, Large Landscape Renovation, California Friendly Landscape Construction, Small Design & Build Construction, Large Design & Build Construction, Small Residential Maintenance, Commercial Construction Small Commercial Maintenance, Medium Commercial Maintenance.

In prior years, The Yard Fairy took home awards in the California Friendly, Landscape Renovation and Small Design & Build categories.
