This past month, I had the pleasure of attending the Pacific Horticulture Symposium which I blogged about for 3 days in September. What an amazing and inspiring experience this was!

This year's program was entitled "Gardening Under Mediterranean Skies VII: Lessons in Sustainable Gardening" and took place in some very breathtaking and picturesque locations in Santa Barbara, CA.

I blogged this in three parts as it was happening, but you can also review photos and read my notes right on the website (see below for more info and links).

October's landscaping feature article is all about Water Features for Your Garden: Fountains, Ponds and Waterfalls. Check it out below.

DAY TRIP WITH THE YARD FAIRY

THE PACIFIC HORTICULTURE SYMPOSIUM

Below is a brief synapsis of the event I attended called "Gardening Under Mediterranean Skies VII: Lessons in Sustainable Gardening." I wish you could have been there learning and enjoying with me, but perhaps the photos I've taken will give you an idea of just how wonderful this really was!

Day One: We visited Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum as well as two private gardens, and three vineyards - Buttonwood Farm, Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards, and Lafond Winery. Much wine was had and many gorgeous gardens were perused. "Live vicariously through my experience" by clicking on my blog entry here.

Day Two brought two informative and fascinating lectures on sustainability by Pamela Berstler and Bernard Trainor, as well as a visit to Ganna Walska Lotusland and the award winning Casa Nueva building and garden which was commissioned by the Air Pollution Control District. Read about these in detail by clicking on this web page. Don't miss the photos - there are some really magnificent ones there!

Day Three: Contemporary Sustainable Private Landscapes. This included visits to 4 private gardens, including Isabelle Greene who specializes in rainwater collection, Puck Erikson's naturalist theme combining oaks and succulents, a third garden of succullents and companion plants, and finally, the estate home of Santa Barbara architect Sydney Baumgartner who is a master organic gardener. Explore what we learned on this page.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Water Features for Your Garden: Ponds, Fountains and Waterfalls

A water feature such as a pond or fountain adds an element of relaxation and tranquility to your garden. Not only does this serve as a major focal point, but it is a welcome attractant for birds and butterflies. Water also adds soothing sounds as it flows gently from a miniature waterfall or pours over the sides of a pretty fountain.

From huge ponds to smaller fountains, there are a wide variety of water features to choose from to fit your space, style and preferences. The three major types we'll be discussing here are ponds, fountains, and waterfalls. Feel free to use these ideas as a springboard for other creative, water-focused additions to your front or back yard.
