Happy Spring to all, and welcome to the new Yard Fairy newsletter subscribers!

Mother Nature has shed her overcoat here in San Diego, and we're pretty excited about this. (Although it is true that she only needs a light winter jacket around this part of the country!)
In celebration of spring and the arrival of landscaping and gardening season, here's a whole crop of new reading material for you from The Yard Fairy...
First, we've got some advice for choosing outdoor lawn, patio and garden furniture. The Yard Fairy gives the pros and cons of aluminum, wrought iron, wood and plastic so you can decide which is right for you.
For newcomers and those who missed last month's announcement, The Yard Fairy just launched two brand-new services. These are specially created for those looking to go DIY with their landscaping yet can still use a little expert guidance:
1. Garden Coaching for clients who prefer to keep costs down by planting their own gardens.
2. Do It Yourself Landscape Designs, which The Yard Fairy can develop for any client in any part of the country or even the world!
And for the green-thumb-havers among us, I've posted some helpful planting tips. Why not make yours an edible landscape this year? Read Spring Vegetables: What, When and How to Plant.
Finally... a question came in from a NJ gardener who wants to know what she should do to ready her garden beds for planting. Here's the link to my garden-starting tips for east-coasters.

The Yard Fairy's Guide to Buying Outdoor Furniture
The point of having a plant-filled, luscious backyard is to be able to enjoy all that it has to offer. The best way to do this is to sit comfortably on a bench or around a table in quiet contemplation or with friends. So at some point in your landscaping project, you'll want to begin the process for selecting and adding furniture to your patio and to various other "R and R areas" of your yard.
When choosing outdoor furniture, carefully consider the different types and styles that are available. What you decide on largely has to do with your personal taste, your budget and whatever fits in with your garden's theme.
While aesthetics factor in to a certain extent, what it all comes down to in the end is simplicity, practicality and comfort. A sturdy, durable chair is much more likely than a flimsy but pretty one, to survive the elements and endure whatever abuse (however unintentional) may take place during family barbecues.

NJ Gardener Asks for Springtime Garden-Starting Tips
A New Jersey Gardener Writes...
Dear Yard Fairy,
I'm writing from NJ, where the blanket of snow that covered my little garden patch for the last month is finally disappearing!
This will be my third year as a novice organic gardener. You would think that after 3 summers of growing quite the bounty of produce, I'd be better at this... but every spring it seems I'm still taking the haphazard approach. So I thought I'd email you a photo of my garden bed and ask for some expert advice!...
