Winter Planting Ideas from the Yard Fairy: Non-Traditional Choices to Spruce Up Your Holidays!

holiday planters for southern california

It's that time of year when the seasons change, the weather gets colder, and that holiday feeling begins to kick in. Winter is the perfect opportunity to bring out plants with deep and rich colors to celebrate the season and holidays. Being in Southern California, we are more lucky than most to be able to use a variety of plants due to our warmer climate. Plants are a great, easy way to lend festive flair to both the inside and outside of your home.

End-of-year holiday celebrations traditionally feature bright, bold colors - holly berries, evergreens, and pointsettias come to mind. Here at The Yard Fairy, we like to put a contemporary spin on the holidays using splashes of color in the form of unique and creative plant choices to brighten up your winter season and surroundings.

As you can see, the plant pictured above forms the shape of a Christmas tree. We've featured rosemary for the center and allowed it to peak as it gets to the top. In keeping with the holiday theme, we adorned the outer perimeter of our planter with white and green leaves. To recreate this look for your own home, try dymondia or any filler that brings out the rest of the planter. Spread some red cyclamen or any plant featuring soft, deep red colored flowers about as filler. For extra festive flair, drape a plant down sides of the pot.

Begonias are another great, warm-climate plant offering a bit of Christmas cheer. The Capricorn Begonia rex hybrid displays dark green leaves dotted with a deep red center that is festively fringed with white. Explore the many different varieties of begonias and see which ones complement your decor best.

We may not typically have snow in southern California, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying the frost-fringed effect. The Yard Fairy enjoys using plants with delicate, white-tipped leaves or miniature white flowers in our cooler-weather displays. Try Diamond Frost as either the focal point or the filler of your planter. It holds its own both solo or grouped with other, contrasting plants - for example, a tall flax plant can be the centerpiece, with the diamond frost sprinkled about the edges, and a red cyclamen added in for a splash of color.

Winter colors can also include deep purples. Try planting Wine Oxalis, which has deep purple leaves adorned with tiny white flowers, on its own. You can get a dark colored, leafy plant, and sprinkle white flowers about it to give it that winter feel.

The Yard Fairy can create holiday plant displays in time for your seasonal celebrations! For more information, contact us by phone or email! Info@YardFairy.com or 760.804.1661.
