  • Have you done a little landscaping on your own but found it to be confusing or overwhelming?

San Diego Low Water Landscaper The Yard Fairy is proud to offer our all-new, Garden Coaching Services. This is for landscaping clients who prefer to manage the bulk of the work on their own, yet would benefit from talking with a professional who can teach them how to transform their yard into something truly magical!

Landscaping Isn't as Easy as it Looks...

What people don't realize when they first set out to redesign their yards is how much time, planning and preparation goes into it up front. Each time you make a wrong decision regarding growing or caring for plants in your yard, you end up wasting valuable time and money. You may start out with the best of intentions, only to find yourself mired in confusion.

  • Where do I start?

  • What plants do I buy?

  • Where should I buy them?

  • When is the right time to plant which varieties of plants?

  • What about spacing concerns?

  • How do I care for my plants properly?

  • What about pests and disease?

  • How often should I water?

And the most perplexing question of all...

How much is all of this going to cost me?

Here are some all-too-common mistakes made by novice gardeners and amateur landscape artists! How many of these have you made?

Placing too many plants too close together. When the plants grow to mature size, they crowd each other out which can lead to more maintenance, incorrect pruning, rot and disease, not to mention it just doesn't look very nice!

Purchasing plants on impulse. Later, you find out that there isn't enough space to accommodate them, or you chose a wild range of colors that just don't go together, or the growing conditions aren't right, so the plants wither away and you must purchase new ones.

Buying all your plants at the same time of the year. We call this 'Spring Fever'. You know that feeling, the one that comes over you around March or April and everything at the nursery looks so enticing. You plant it all up, and come August you wonder what you were thinking.

Selecting plants that are hard to maintain or won't thrive in your area. Here in San Diego, drought-resistant plants are the easiest kind to decorate your yard with. Any others will result in money wasted!

Failing to prep and/or maintain the soil properly. Sometimes we get lazy or we just don't know where to begin with planting beds. Our precious plants are less likely to survive because of it!

Over- or under-watering. Southern California residents especially should watch out for this, as our current water restrictions can make maintaining a garden pretty tricky if you don't know the workarounds.

Planting seeds or cuttings that you won't be around to care for. Many new landscapers start off strong, only to find that gardening is no match for our hectic lives and busy schedules.

These are just a few of the many mishaps that can turn what should have been a pleasant and relaxing gardening experience into a serious comedy of costly errors. Thankfully, The Yard Fairy offers professional landscaping consulting services for people who value their time and money.
